You have to play devils advocate..I certainly do! it is certainly fair point Emily and my simple answer would be yes..but y'know me...I am seldom a woman of few words
What I feel is the acctual time of diagnosis may not be the best time for the GP to say "Joe Bloggs you have a terminal illness" then "are you signed up to the ODR?" in the same breath
..if you see where I am coming from. Who brings up the question of a will? Do GP's? sorry I don't have one as we have nothing to put in a will(as yet) I always thought the subject of a legal document such as a will was brought into conversation by banks, morgate lenders, solicitors etc when you are at a stage in your life dealing with them?
Perhaps the palliative care team would be better suited to bringing up the question of a will and the ODR?....or for the GP to make a follow up appointment for the terminally ill patient to discuss such issues after they have had a few days to come to terms with the diagnosis?
I just know from my experience with my Mum the day she was told she was terminal she was in a state of shock and it took time for her to come to terms with everything she'd been told, she even forgot alot of the information given to her at that time, which makes me question time of diagnosis as being the time to ask about organ donation?
I know when you register with a GP you are given the ODR leaflet, perhaps GP's should ask their patients routinely, like when they ask if they smoke or drink....ask them when they are fit & well would they sign up to the ODR and if they say "no" then ask them again in a few years time?
It is I feel about timing, not for it to be in the aftermath of a bombshell...
again just my ponderings...

I posted this one in my Transplant Kids e-newsletter...Logan is the 1st child in Wales to have this transplant,it's becoming more common and ther's now an active adult bowel tx program.
Molly,Will and my lad Aaron are intestinal transplantees all done at Birmingham Childrens but as I understand it Kings now have a paediatric intestinal transplant program.
It is just amazing Logan must have been born with gastrochisis(when the bowel is outside the body) I know a few kids who have had an intestinal transplant for the same disorder.
Here's hoping he goes from strength to strength....

From the BBC: Organs still short as donors rise
This article is seeking comments from those on the ODR or those who have received a transplant. Have posted my story and highlighted LLTGL's work/Save Jess campaign and would encourage others to tell their stories too.

Hi There,
Just to let you know the daily mail are running my daughter Rachels donor story on Tuesday22/12/09. I think it will be quite a big article. The photographer has been to the houseand has taken some pics and copies of photos of Rachel. When the story was published in a Scottish national paper in July the take up rate for donor cards went up quite a bit. Fingers crossed the same will happen.

Hi I have just heard that the editors chose not to run the story so close to Christmas as it was too sad. I have been assured that the story will be in over the next few weeks. It might make people make a new year resolution by registering.
I will keep the board updated

|

Hi there,
I enclose two links regarding a media launch from the Scottish Government. The launch was for a new schools education pack for secondary school pupils in Scotland. Two packs are being distributed to every secondary school. Also at the launch was Catriona and her family It was great just to meet them (and emotional). Everyone was so positive and the coverage in the media was great. My family and I did eight interviews this morningwith local radio, TV and also newspapers.
I have enclosed a link to the video which has 3 life storys and has a transplant surgeon, transplant coordinator and a ITU consultant. The other link is the press release which has went out to all news agencys etc.

Hi,
The BBC reduced the coverage to a minor story due to the time allocated on Bill McLarens Death. The nationals all published a story which was released by the Press Association. Most made the error of saying my wife sandra was a nursing assistant instead of a Nursing Sister. The video below also calls my son Andrew instead of David. It was all done by the same reporter. (Its not like the press to make mistakes. lol). I know my daughter Rachel would have loved the attention. I am just proud of her legacy.
