You have to play devils advocate..I certainly do! Wink it is certainly fair point Emily and my simple answer would be yes..but y'know me...I am seldom a woman of few words Laughing
What I feel is the acctual time of diagnosis may not be the best time for the GP to say "Joe Bloggs you have a terminal illness" then "are you signed up to the ODR?" in the same breath
..if you see where I am coming from. Who brings up the question of a will? Do GP's? sorry I don't have one as we have nothing to put in a will(as yet) I always thought the subject of a legal document such as a will was brought into conversation by banks, morgate lenders, solicitors etc when you are at a stage in your life dealing with them?
Perhaps the palliative care team would be better suited to bringing up the question of a will and the ODR?....or for the GP to make a follow up appointment for the terminally ill patient to discuss such issues after they have had a few days to come to terms with the diagnosis?
I just know from my experience with my Mum the day she was told she was terminal she was in a state of shock and it took time for her to come to terms with everything she'd been told, she even forgot alot of the information given to her at that time, which makes me question time of diagnosis as being the time to ask about organ donation?
I know when you register with a GP you are given the ODR leaflet, perhaps GP's should ask their patients routinely, like when they ask if they smoke or drink....ask them when they are fit & well would they sign up to the ODR and if they say "no" then ask them again in a few years time?

It is I feel about timing, not for it to be in the aftermath of a bombshell...

again just my ponderings...

I posted this one in my Transplant Kids e-newsletter...Logan is the 1st child in Wales to have this transplant,it's becoming more common and ther's now an active adult bowel tx program.
Molly,Will and my lad Aaron are intestinal transplantees all done at Birmingham Childrens but as I understand it Kings now have a paediatric intestinal transplant program.
It is just amazing Logan must have been born with gastrochisis(when the bowel is outside the body) I know a few kids who have had an intestinal transplant for the same disorder.
Here's hoping he goes from strength to strength....

From the BBC: Organs still short as donors rise

This article is seeking comments from those on the ODR or those who have received a transplant. Have posted my story and highlighted LLTGL's work/Save Jess campaign and would encourage others to tell their stories too.

Hi There,
Just to let you know the daily mail are running my daughter Rachels donor story on Tuesday22/12/09. I think it will be quite a big article. The photographer has been to the houseand has taken some pics and copies of photos of Rachel. When the story was published in a Scottish national paper in July the take up rate for donor cards went up quite a bit. Fingers crossed the same will happen.

Hi I have just heard that the editors chose not to run the story so close to Christmas as it was too sad. I have been assured that the story will be in over the next few weeks. It might make people make a new year resolution by registering.

I will keep the board updated

Hey guys...

Theres a little article about me in todays Liverpool Echo
You can see it online here: http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpool-news/local-news/2010/01/01/eternally-grateful-to-my-organ-donor-100252-25503749/

There are 2 other parts to the story... One from the ICU consultant here: http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpool-news/local-news/2010/01/01/royal-liverpool-hospital-doctor-arpan-guha-launches-organ-donor-campaign-100252-25503748/

And finally a gentleman waiting for a kidney transplant... (I used to dialyse with him when I was first diagnosed) here: http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpool-news/local-news/2010/01/01/waiting-on-the-organ-donor-transplant-list-100252-25503747/

There are no pictures on there which is a shame I presume they will be in the actual paper, as we all got together to have our pictures taken! Makes interesting reading anyway seeing the 3 different points of view.

Best wishes for 2010 x

I thought this was pretty interesting, before transplanting a windpipe into this woman they placed it inside her arm to grow new tissue from her.

Hi there,
I enclose two links regarding a media launch from the Scottish Government. The launch was for a new schools education pack for secondary school pupils in Scotland. Two packs are being distributed to every secondary school. Also at the launch was Catriona and her family It was great just to meet them (and emotional). Everyone was so positive and the coverage in the media was great. My family and I did eight interviews this morningwith local radio, TV and also newspapers.

I have enclosed a link to the video which has 3 life storys and has a transplant surgeon, transplant coordinator and a ITU consultant. The other link is the press release which has went out to all news agencys etc.

It was some day hey?
We left at 7am and din't get home till 4pm..the media were there en force..which was great..it was lovely to finaly meet you and your family Craig (sorry for bubbling a bit)
Yeah we reckoned we did 8 interviews too certainly one heck of an experience.Did BBC Scotland run a bit? I didn't see it,perhaps 'cos our well loved Bill Maclaren passing away took up a fair bit o' the news there was no time for it?
Here's hoping it goes down well in the schools have to say I am well impressed with it,as well as all the info(inc intestinal transplant!) there's loadsa activities and discussion questions suited for biology(med sciences) SocEd and religious moral philisophical education(RMPE)
We're proud to have been asked to help with it.

Hi,
The BBC reduced the coverage to a minor story due to the time allocated on Bill McLarens Death. The nationals all published a story which was released by the Press Association. Most made the error of saying my wife sandra was a nursing assistant instead of a Nursing Sister. The video below also calls my son Andrew instead of David. It was all done by the same reporter. (Its not like the press to make mistakes. lol). I know my daughter Rachel would have loved the attention. I am just proud of her legacy.

What a lovely article this is?

Must be strange to be affected by both sides of Organ Donation as a family!

The Scottish organ donation ad has been revamped(from Kill Jill) and is out on the screens now Spare Clare...
http://thegovmonitor.com/world_news/britain/give-the-gift-of-health-and-life-by-becoming-an-organ-donor-23997.html
The campaign is also on many local radio stations The Great Donate
http://www.forthone.com/sectional.asp?id=36515

Also this may be of interest....
The film on the struggle to get more donors goes out on BBC1's Inside Out London at 7.30 next Monday.
If you are not in the London area, it can be viewed on BBC iplayer from next Tuesday - just go to the Inside Out site

New series starting the The Guardian from a guy waiting for his second kidney transplant and about to go back on dialysis. Lots of interesting comments and sign ups to the ODR.
