I am just wondering of anyone's experience of having children after lung transplant.
I know there are a lot of issues and most are individual and i will chat with my transplant team eventually but wanted to know of any experiences people have had regarding this issue.
Is it at all viable? (only ive heard many horror stories that after births, the mother suffered with rejection and died) Will medications harm a baby? Are births mainly induced earlier or a caesarean carried out to reduce the impact of pregnancy on the lungs?
Thanks in advance. |

Hi there,
Not sure how your post got overlooked but hope I can help a bit....
Pregnancy post transplant is risky. There is a significant chance that the pregnancy might trigger rejection, and if that is chronic rejection it is irreversable. This said, it has been known for women post transplant to go on and have successful pregnancies.
The other options are adoption and surrogacy. There's a good chance you would get support from the NHS with surrogacy due to pregnancy being a potential risk to the mother's life.
Each transplant unit has their own thoughts and feelings on it all so I suggest you chat to your consultant to find out more.
Hope that helps a bit - good luck _________________ Emily Thackray
